Injection of the Unforseen

The artist Francis Bacon was keenly aware of the importance that the Surrealists accorded chance. It became perhaps his most central article of faith as an Artist, and it was a theme that he developed in private conversation and formal interview throughout his career. It was chance, Bacon held - "the slip of the painting hand, the dribble of paint, the collision of shapes, that gave the image its necessary injection of the unforeseen."
