an abstract approach
Artist Statement
I do not set out to paint pictures - I set out to simply paint, to experience the moving of color on canvas or paper. I try not to get caught up in whether the painting is a thing of beauty, but rather is it something I am pleased to have created.
When I begin to paint, I can rarely tell you what it is that I am trying to capture on the canvas. But when I am finished, I can always tell you whether I have captured it.
The look of my paintings is the result of the conditions of their creation. And while those conditions may at times appear to be haphazard and capricious, they are quite methodical. Those conditions begin with the concept that I am but the messenger, and anything and everything presented to me while painting is due consideration.
Nothing is wasted, nothing is insignificant. One thing leads to another, that leads to another. Each brushstroke is dependent upon the previous brushstroke. A painting is never really completed, it is only that for whatever reason, one agrees to ignore further possibilities and moves on to a new painting.
