Leaving the Harbor

Because of his paintings’ impact, Franz Kline was immediately dubbed “the black and white artist,” and in later years he would at times feel restricted by it. At a party when Sidney Janis was his dealer, Kline referred to the necessity to produce always black and white paintings and remarked: “They won’t let me leave the harbor.”
